"Come and catch me...if you dare."

- Malvel through Blaze

Blaze is one of the Ghost Beasts of the Forbidden Land and alongside Stealth, one of the two who attack Avantia. He is a dragon Evil Beast (the first dragon to be evil in the series) based on the Asian Dragon. The number of toes on each limb suggests he is based more on the Chinese Dragon than the Japanese Dragon, with four toes suggesting inspiration from typical non-imperial Chinese art. The fact Blaze seems to be the non-imperial type of Chinese Dragon may reflect how in his attack on Avantia, he is completely subservient to Malvel. While in his first battle with Taladon the Swift, Blaze had complete control of his own form. But during his attack on Avantia, his body was taken over by Malvel. As with the other Ghost Beasts, Blaze can switch between a corporeal form and a spectral one. In spectral form, Blaze can be harmed by shadows. Unlike the other Ghost Beasts, Blaze has a restriction on his ghost form: he can only transform into a ghost in low temperatures, and high temperatures force him to turn back into physical form. The Ice Dragon has blue blood. Notably, the territory Blaze controlled in the Forbidden Land is unknown as he was not fought within his own domain and it is not shown on the map. Whether he actually controlled a territory is unknown, and he may be nomadic in nature. Alternatively, he may have been promised a large swathe of territory in the invasion of the rest of Avantia. It is suggested that the Ice Dragon has an obsession with freezing the land, potentially due to an idolised view of the Great Ice Age that covered Avantia centuries before. The Beast's ice breath is incredibly strong, able to completely freeze Stonewin Volcano and Epos.

Invasion of Eastern Avantia[]

Blaze was one of the six Beasts who attacked eastern Avantia, seeking to capture territory from the kingdom. The coalition successfully drove out or killed the inhabitants and claimed the land as their own, with Avantia abandoning it to them. While the land was carved up into the domains of different Beasts, whether Blaze's efforts were rewarded with territory or not is unclear, but the Beast would remain in the Forbidden Land.

Battle against Taladon[]

Blaze and the other Ghost Beasts joined forces with Malvel to attempt to annex the rest of Avantia and decay it to match the Forbidden Land, with Malvel instated as king of the wasteland. Taladon was dispatched to deal with the Beasts. Blaze was the fifth Beast he fought in the Forbidden Land, with the dragon being defeated in battle. The Ice Dragon would return after the Master of the Beasts' defeat, however he and his allies would not attempt the attack on Avantia after seeing how a single Avantian warrior could defeat five of them in fair combat.

The Amulet of Avantia[]

A decade later, Malvel would convince them to make a second attack on Avantia, entrusting a piece of the Amulet of Avantia to each of them in an attempt to ensure Taladon would not be brought back to a physical living state. Malvel was content to sit back and allow the Ghost Beasts fight the Avantians within their own domain, however after the first four Beasts were vanquished, the wizard changed strategy, seeming to fear Blaze and Stealth may also be defeated before the attack began. While he had only offered the first four Beasts mild support (such as creating unnatural wind to make reaching the spot Equinus hid his piece of the Amulet more difficult), he now chose to take matters into his own hands and ordered the remaining Beasts to begin their attacks on Avantia. Either voluntarily or forcefully, Blaze surrendered his body for Malvel to occupy, which the wizard saw as necessary to ensure the plan's viability now that the attacking forces were significantly reduced. Whether Malvel controlled the Beast or simply used it as a front-line war room is unclear. Blaze was tasked with securing Stonewin volcano and binding Epos inside with his ice. The reason for this was likely to ensure a path from the Forbidden Land to the City for Stealth via Stonewin and Rokwin (the two villages near the volcano), as the Ghost Panther's attack on the City was the key to Malvel's strategy to take power, and the Flame Bird could jeopardise the Ghost Beast's attempt to make it to the capital. Malvel also created the Plague Hyenas to besiege Rokwin with disease, lowering resistance further for the two Ghost Beasts.

Lü Bu

Blaze descending on Derlot's garden.

Blaze carved a path from the Forbidden Land to Stonewin volcano, blasting the land as he went and leaving a trail of ice in his wake. The Ice Dragon struck quickly, assailing the volcano with Epos still inside with a blast of ice creating a sheet across the crater. Epos conjured fireballs in an attempt to free herself, but repeated enforcing blasts of ice from the Ghost Beast meant the ice shelf was restored repeatedly, constantly fixing any damage the Flame Bird could make. The Plague Hyena plot was encountering difficulties due to the medicine man of Rokwin, Derlot, growing horn-fern, which cured the plague easily. Malvel drew Blaze away from the volcano and towards Derlot's home to destroy the plants. The Ice Dragon approached quickly, propelling himself by repeatedly shifting his tail in a serpentine motion. Derlot initially believed the Beast to be smoke, but soon realised it was a Beast. Blaze came to a halt above the garden, drew back his head, and released an icy barrage upon the area. The plants were frozen, but Derlot was left alive and only mildly covered in ice. The Ice Dragon flicked his tail to bash the ground, creating shudders that shattered the frozen plants. Blaze then returned to the volcano, with Malvel believing the Plague Hyenas could no longer be stopped.

Dong Zhuo

Blaze attempting to suffocate Tom.

After defeating the Plague Hyenas and delivering willow bark to help counter the plague the creatures had created, Tom and Elenna set off to defeat the Ghost Beast, however stopped to rest for the night. Blaze located them during their sleep and coiled around Tom's waist to crush or suffocate the vulnerable warrior. Tom awoke and began to struggle, trying to call out to Elenna and free his arms. In response, the Ice Dragon tightened his hold on his foe and lowered his head to meet Tom's gaze, as Malvel wanted to watch Tom suffocate through the Beast's eyes. He was able to knock over his shield with his leg, awakening Elenna, who leapt up and fired at the Ice Dragon, the arrow sinking into his side and causing Blaze to weaken his grip, allowing Tom to survive and scramble free. Silver also attacked, but his fangs couldn't penetrate the Beast's scales. The Ghost Beast lashed out with his forked tail, wrapping around Tom's ankle and beginning to pull him towards his maw. Despite this, Tom was still able to reach his sword, and turned to strike the Beast, who entered ghost form in response. Tom slashed repeatedly, but all the attacks sailed through the phantasmal flesh before Blaze retook physical form. Elenna spotted the piece of the Amulet of Avantia lodged in the scales of the dragon's head and leapt for it, but was struck to the ground by Blaze's tail, who then took to the air and flew back towards Stonewin volcano, with Malvel taunting his foes to follow as they departed.

The Avantians reached the crater and encouraged Epos to blast through, but as she readied the fireball that would break through, Blaze emerged from the sky, roaring, and blasted the ice sheet, restoring its integrity. Elenna fired at the Ice Dragon to draw his attention, the arrow sinking into the Beast's flank and causing him to howl in pain. She fired a second time, but Blaze assumed ghost form. He rushed down at Tom, who had leapt on the ice sheet, blasting ice at the warrior, missing as he leapt aside. Tom leapt towards Blaze, but he turned into a ghost again, doing the same for the next leaping attack. Malvel taunted such ineffective strategies, causing Tom to wildly swing his blade in anger. Epos, aware of Blaze's weakness, clutched a fireball in her talons, the light increasing the size of Tom's shadow, so when he flailed his weapon, a swing of the sword's shadow struck Blaze in ghost form, drawing blood and causing him to howl in pain. Tom realised what had happened and struck again, the shadow connecting and harming Blaze further. The Ice Dragon retreated out of the shadow's reach by moving to a crater ledge above Tom. Tom used the White Jewel to command his shadow to attack, who rushed to the ledge. Blaze lashed at it with his tail, avoided by a duck and being countered by a stab to the tail. The Beast leapt from the ledge to escape, being pursued by the shadow, renewing the ice sheet as he sailed down. As the shadow drew close, Blaze lashed with his tail again, this time striking the shadow and throwing him across the crater to strike the wall, before blasting the ice shelf again to keep Epos imprisoned. As Blaze chased the shadow, Tom was able to break the restrictions of the White Jewel locking the body in place through willpower to smash his shield into the ice sheet, although the single movement drained him of his strength. This allowed Epos to escape, the heat she radiated forcing the Beast out of ghost form. With Tom prone once again, Blaze rushed at him, the shadow being too slow to reach Tom first, however an arrow fired by Elenna struck him in the neck, causing him to turn in pain, striking the ground and allowing the shadow to unify with Tom, restoring his movement. Malvel roared in fury as Blaze returned to the air, telling Tom he would still die in the volcano before the Ice Dragon spewed out more ice, being dodged by Tom throwing himself out of the way. Epos swept towards Blaze, crashing into him, the impact dislodging the piece of the Amulet. The Ice Dragon shook the Flame Bird loose and fired another volley of ice at Tom, which the warrior ducked under, rushed beneath the dragon, and stabbed his sword into his underbelly, the blade becoming lodged there and carried away by the Beast. Epos lunged again, but was thrown away by a flick of the Ice Dragon's tail. As the lava began to return to the volcano, Malvel reinstated his promise to kill Tom here as Blaze drew back his head and released his ice again. Tom used his shield to reflect the ice back at the dragon (potentially due to Ferno's scale), freezing the Beast and creating a wall of ice between the combatants. The cold forced Malvel from the Blaze's body, who retreated, with the dragon Beast fading away as the wizard left, defeated.
