"You can't escape. The master's not like us. He can see in the dark, for one thing. He could be watching us right now."

- Jed on the subject of Fang

Fang the Bat Fiend is a huge bat Beast living in the Golden Valley of Kayonia. Fang runs the gold mining operations that take place there, where the slave workers refer to him in hushed tones as "the master", a position given to him by Velmal in return for his loyalty and service. Any worker who disobeys or falters in their work are picked off by the Beast, being taken away and killed as a warning to the other miners. Fang was also responsible for guarding the Red Jewel, a naturally occurring gemstone found in the mines that was one of the ingredients of Marc's Potion. The Beast can induce blindness on any human in a short distance from him, sapping their sight and stealing it for himself, giving him keen vision on top of powerful echolocation. The Beast's flesh is incredibly weak to sunlight, beginning to smoulder when exposed to rays of the sun.

The World of Chaos[]

Fang was a blight on Kayonia for centuries, living in caves in the kingdom and attacking those who neared his lair. When Velmal fled to Kayonia following his defeat in Gwildor, he began plotting to take power in the kingdom and recruiting the Evil Beasts living there to aid him. Velmal approached Fang and convinced the Beast to aid him, having used magic to find a large amount of gold in a earth below a reservoir in the north and desired to mine it, with the two agreeing the Bat Fiend would take charge of any mining activity within the area. Velmal used his magic to force the water of the reservoir out, the water flooding a nearby town while allowing the gold to be accessed. Under Fang's supervision, a mine was constructed operating on slave labour, mostly from the flooded town, and large quantities of gold began to be excavated. The Evil Beast ensured the operation continued by killing any workers who either refused to work or were unable to do so from exhaustion. Despite the cruel conditions of the mines, the workers took immense pride in their work, with many preferring their lives as slaves in the mine to having freedom due to it being an easier life (though Tom theorises Velmal may have tampered with the minds of the miners). The gold harvested from the Golden Valley supposedly became a resource Kayonia relied upon and while the validity of such a claim is dubious, the towns around the Golden Valley, which had previously been incredibly poor, became reliant on the gold to survive, ensuring the voluntary arrivals of new workers when Fang executed a useless or worthless miner. During the initial stages of the mining operation, the Red Jewel was found, which the Beast began fiercely guarding.

Pipistrelle

Fang attacking Toby.

Not every miner was content to suffer so the nearby towns could become richer, and one miner, Toby, used his pickaxe to break the chains around his limbs and began to flee towards the exit of the mine. As Toby climbed through the mine shaft towards the surface, his escape was spotted by Fang, who shrieked and flew after the escapee. The Bat Fiend opened his jaws as he approached, sinking his fangs into Toby's shoulder and soaring past, the attack sending the miner falling down the shaft. The Beast moved to loom over his victim and attacked, killing him. Fang returned to overseeing the remaining miners and a call for a replacement for Toby soon went out.

Noctule

Fang descending to grab Zak.

Tom and Elenna used Toby's death as their way to infiltrate the mine, pretending to be his replacements and began working in the gold mine. As they began, a miner, Zak, collapsed, completely exhausted from the work and lack of rest and food they were provided with. Fang watched him try to struggle back to his feet, failing, and receiving no aid from the other miners, who were too scared of the Beast to pause their work. As Zak was unable to recover, the Bat Fiend screeched and descended, his presence sapping the sight of Tom and Elenna, revealing his power. Fang grabbed Zak and carried him deep into the mine to kill him.

Alcathoe

Fang pursuing the mine carts.

As Fang returned from killing Zak, the signal that the day's work was done was given, and the miners piled into a set of mine carts that took them back to the sleeping quarters. Tom and Elenna, in the first cart, switched the direction of the carts with the track lever, taking the carts towards the exit. Noticing the carts change direction, Fang screeched and began to pursue the carts. Tom, Elenna, and Silver leapt from the cart as Fang approached, the Beast focusing on Tom. The warrior began to retreat down the tunnel, pursued by Fang. Tom slashed at the Beast, but the induced blindness meant his attacks slid off his fur, while a volley of arrows from Elenna went wide as she only saw her target as a blur. Tom entered a shaft of sunlight, which shined in from a hole in the cavern ceiling, leaving him unable to see Fang at all, but when the Beast tried to attack, his wing entered the light and began to burn, causing the Bat Fiend to shriek in pain. Spinning to find a way to escape the sun, Fang retreated down the tunnel.

Barbastelle

Fang attempting to attack Tom and Elenna, struggling due to their heightened hearing.

Brandt

Fang being carried by the water, attempting to free himself.

Fang positioned himself on the roof of the mine shaft's tunnel, ambushing Tom and Elenna when they took a cart back into the mine by dropping from the roof. The Beast battered Tom and his shield with his wings and head, knocking Tom down as his foe missed a slice of his sword. Roaring in frustration as his burnt wing meant he was unable to keep up with the cart, Fang grabbed an edge of it and tipped it over. The Bat Fiend landed and flung the cart aside to face Tom and Elenna, who had tied themselves together to ensure they weren't separated as they went completely blind. Fang lunged, slapping Tom with a wing, to which Tom blindly swung his blade, slashing one of the Bat Fiend's wings, making their foe shriek in pain. After Fang saw him and Elenna press themselves against the wall to ensure he couldn't attack from behind, the Beast chose to attack the two from above, but the flap of his wings gave himself away, allowing Tom to slash upwards to force the Beast away. As Tom grew used to being blind, his hearing improved, hearing a swish of the Bat Fiend's wing as his side and slashing his blade, warding the Beast off, who gave a hiss of fury. Fang landed and tried to inch across the floor to them silently, but his claws scraped against the stone, and Tom slashed at the ground, drawing blood with a howl of agony. Fang took to the air and rushed at Tom, quickly slapping him with his good wing and knocking him into the wall, dropping his sword, to which the Bat Fiend gave a screech of victory. The Beast attacked again, forcing Tom to flee, dragging Elenna with him. Tom was able to locate a shaft of sunlight, stopping the pursuing Bat Fiend, who snarled as he tried to find a way around the light. Using the Mirror of Gwildor, Tom reflected the light at the tunnel wall where he had heard water from the flooded town, burning a large hole in the rock and allowing the water to come flooding in. Fang was quickly surrounded by water, shrieking and thrashing, striking Tom with a wing as he did so. The water forced the Bat Fiend back into the main mining cavern, where holes were prominent, the water driving him into sunlight as it carried him there. The currents dragged Fang into one of the cavern's largest shafts of light, causing him to struggle harder while screaming in agony before exploding into a swarm of bats who flew away.
